Ground Has Broken for the COVID Memorial Monument
As part of WPNT Ltd.'s Giving Back pledge, a milestone to note. Ground has broken for the Covid Monument Memorial of Honor, Remembrance and Resilience. WPNT Ltd. has been a supporter of the effort from the on set including the international design contest held earlier this year. The winning design prize of $20,000 was awarded to Sculptor Professor Casey Schachner at Georgia Southern University. The sculpture monument will be located in the Illinois Medical District and be surrounded by a half-acre park.
The effort is meant to provide a permanent physical and virtual platform to remember those who died from the virus, honor those front line workers who literally ‘kept the lights on’ and underscore the importance of resilience. It was that resilience that allowed people to persevere during lockdowns and the speed of delivering vaccines. The monument and surrounding park are expected to be completed in late 2025. Sponsors of the effort continue to grow including the most recent additions of Pfizer, Strive Health, Illinois Federation of Teachers and Christies.
